Laptop Configuration Session

In order to prepare students laptops in advance of classes, the Business School's Information Technology Group (ITG) offers incoming students a pre-configuration website which allows students to prepare their laptops prior to the on campus configuration session. Students can sign up for a pre-term Laptop Configuration Session through their to-do list on the admitted student website.ITG has developed a “Drop-off Laptop Configuration” program to make this process less time consuming for students. Prior to Orientation, students will access the ITG Student Configuration site through a link in the to-do list on the admitted student site. From the ITG Student Configuration site, students will use the form to complete Mandatory, Suggested, and Optional items on your laptop. You will also be able to sign up for a configuration session. Please review the information carefully to determine if anything that will be done during this process will conflict with the current configuration of your computer. If you feel an item may conflict, you may opt out of configuration. The mandatory pre-configuration steps MUST be completed prior to dropping off your laptop for your scheduled configuration session. Students may also choose to complete the suggested tasks listed BEFORE you arrive for Orientation. If these steps are not done, ITG will complete them for you during your session. Please arrive as early as possible to your scheduled configuration session to drop off your laptop. Your laptop will be set up with all the software you will need during your time as an MBA student based on the form you filled out on the ITG Student Configuration site. You will pick up your laptop at the end of the day at the time designated on your orientation schedule. Laptops MUST be picked up at this time! Plan to spend approximately one hour with ITG to review the work performed and discuss IT at the Business School. Listed below are the software packages and other items that will be installed during the configuration process.

Company says personal information untapped on stolen laptop

DALLAS — The chief executive of a personnel-services company said Thursday there is no indication that anyone has tapped personal information on nearly 160,000 people that was contained on a stolen computer.
Paul J. Sarvadi, the CEO of Houston-based Administaff Inc., said the company has finished notifying people whose information was on the computer.
Administaff disclosed last week that the laptop computer was reported missing Oct. 3. The machine had information including Social Security numbers, names and addresses for 63,000 employees and 96,000 former employees who were paid by the company, which provides personnel services for small businesses.
Sarvadi said the missing computer hasn't been recovered. He said it was stolen from an employee's car, which was parked outside a grocery store.
The computer was password-protected, but the personal information was not kept in an encrypted file, in violation of company policy, he said.
The company offered to pay for one year of credit-monitoring services with fraud assistance for the affected workers.

The Laptop Advantage

A laptop computer is as much a part of the graduate programs as textbooks and course packs. MBA and PhD graduate students attending the University of Michigan Business School are expected to own a laptop computer. BBA students may benefit from a laptop and can take advantage of the services, but are not expected to own one. Most courses use web-based UM CTools for instruction and support. Our mobile computing environment provides wireless Internet access, virtual lab software, and printing for laptop users from anywhere in the school. The school provides facilities to complement student laptops. See our Labs and Classrooms section for information on our Mobile Computing Environment and Laptops in the Classroom.

Laptops meant to replace desktop systems may be too heavy to carry for long periods of time but can provide features valuable to mobile professionals.

Lease or Buy a Laptop

When making the decision to buy a laptop for mobile use, it's important to consider the options you have available. You can purchase new, used or refurbished or even lease a laptop. Decide what factors are most important and keep in mind what your budget will allow. If state of the art technology is key, then leasing is your best option. Examine your options before you buy a lapop.

Before You Buy A Laptop
